Mercer On Mission - Vietnam 2010

Mercer On Mission is a unique blend of study abroad and service-learning that provides life-changing experiences for students through academic instruction, cultural immersion, meaningful service, and spiritual reflection.

More about Mercer On Mission

The Mercer On Mission teams are selected through an application process. Current nursing, medical, pharmacy and undergraduate students are screened by a faculty committee and Mercer on Mission team leaders.

Mercer On Mission is a service-learning program that requires undergraduate and nursing students to be enrolled in 6 hours of coursework and pharmacy students to be enrolled in 11 hours of coursework; medical students receive credit for their clinical rotation. The tuition money is applied to the total cost of the trip and funds are raised to subsidize the remaining costs.

The students participating in Mercer On Mission will have ample opportunity to learn, practice and sharpen medical skills while providing direct medical care in an underserved area of the world. Students, working under the supervision of the Mercer medical, pharmacy, nursing, and public health faculty, will engage in clinical care activities as a team with students from the other Mercer professional schools. Each will practice and develop individual skills as they provide culturally appropriate care. Living and practicing in a low-income country will allow students to develop an understanding of a distinct culture, religion, economics, government, and health care system. The knowledge obtained from the Mercer On Mission experience can then be applied as a comparison to health care in America.
